Everyone goes through phases of obsession – whether it’s something newly released, rediscovered, something we use every day, or totally random. See how many of these you get and how many of them make you wonder what I’m doing with my life.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
If you looked at the date on this post and know anything about that’s going on in the world right now, you know this was going to be on the list. Animal Crossing is a game series that’s been around for decades. Nintendo struck gold with this game; the in-game time and seasons are tied to actual real life time and seasons, meaning players have to play the game for months (or tweak some settings in their game system) in order to collect everything. For a completionist like me, this is both amazing and totally frustrating. The newest installment sets you up on a little island and it’s the perfect escape from all the craziness going on in the world. The music is calming, the gameplay is casual, and the whole thing is just too cute. It’s a simple a beautiful way to spend all day cooped up in the house, especially since it’s been raining constantly for days.
Ipsy Glam Bag
Anyone who does any sort of subscription box knows this addiction. Getting a little package every month full of fun new stuff is so exciting! I had always wanted to branch out with makeup but it’s so darn expensive. I didn’t want to waste $8 separately on a bunch of different things I did’nt know how to use from the drug store. Ipsy has allowed me to try out highlighter, liquid eyeshadow, liquid lipsticks, cleansers, primers, and so many more things I never would have bought on my own. Each month you get a cute little bag (or a bigger bag if you want an upgrade!) with a selection of sample-sized product. It’s perfect for experimenting and trying out different products, brands, or colors. Plus the bags are so handy! You can use them for sorting your new makeup, storing things like charging cables or hair accessories, time-of-the-month supplies (way easier than carrying your purse if it’s anything like mine!) or regift it to someone else.
Hair masks
I’ve got one on right now! If you haven’t done a hair mask before, you have to jump on this! It’s like a face mas – but for your hair! I was artificially blonde for a few years and have gone back to my natural honey brown but all the at-home dying I was doing damaged my hair. I typically leave mine on for 30 minutes to an hour (package recommendation is usually 10-15 minutes) and wear a plastic shower cap. The cap keeps me from getting the mask all over everything and it also contains the heat from my scalp to really help the moisture sink in. Hair masks come in tons of different varieties with different ingredients and scents, so I like to grab a bunch of them at once so I always have options. You can also make your own hair masks at home if you’re looking for something less expensive or more sustainable.
The Glass Cannon Podcast
This one won’t appeal to everyone, but if you love fantasy, you HAVE to check out this podcast. It’s a real-play tabletop RPG podcast using the Pathfinder game system (similar to Dungeons and Dragons). They’ve expanded their podcast to an entire network of podcasts and a Patreon with a monthly donation that made my jaw drop. These guys have blown my mind with their voice acting, character immersion, and story-telling. It never feels like they’re playing a game, but instead building a collaborative story that rewards us listeners. Their network includes another free-to-listen podcast that is set in a futuristic sci-fi world. They recently began live-streaming the recording of this show and it’s been so exciting being able to see the people behind the characters and the moments they create. They also have multiple Patreon-exclusive podcasts that I’ve yet to delve into but one day I’ll get around to it!
Frozen 2 Soundtrack
Okay, I have a LOT of thoughts about the film’s plot and pacing, but the animation was astounding and the music will not get out of my head. I didn’t see it in theaters so as soon as it came to Disney+ I had to watch it. ‘Show Yourself’ is constantly playing in the background of my brain when it’s not actually playing on my phone and if you haven’t checked out some of the music that didn’t make the final cut, you need to. ‘Home’, a Anna/Kristen Bell song, is a light folksy song that I’m so sad we didn’t get to see in the film. It’s sort of the follow-up, both narratively and musically, to ‘For the First Time in Forever’ but with ‘Some Things Never Change’, there isn’t space in the film. The only other space it makes sense is the end of the film after the climax but the last 30 minutes of the film were probably my favorite, so it’s hard to say I’d put it in there. The pop artist covers of the songs included in the soundtrack are also amazing (um, Kacey Musgraves all day?) and the soundtrack includes instrumental versions of the songs included in the film which means I really get to test my vocal talents with my own karaoke renditions.
So what things have you been obsessed with this month? I’ve been trying to escape some of my obsessions and try out some new stuff during this month since there’s not much else to do! Let me know what things you can’t get enough of and what new things I need to get obsessed with too!
